October is festival season in Austin! Festival tickets can be hard to come by, so here are some events that don’t require quite as much advance planning. THRILLER Zombie Dance Workshop - Thursdays starting October 1, 8:30 - 9:30 PM, Ballet Austin
Learn to dance the iconic steps from Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video, and participate in a flash mob on October 27.
Giant Chess - Saturdays, 12:30 - 3:30 PM, Woolridge Square Park
Bend your mind for FREE and play some chess with these huge pieces. Volunteers are on hand to help beginners. This event is kid-friendly.
Texas Book Festival - Saturday, October 17 - Sunday, October 18, Downtown
This FREE event is bigger and better than ever, with over 300 authors scheduled to attend and activities for all ages. This year is also the Festival’s 20th anniversary.
Austoberfest - Saturday, October 17, Scholz Garden
Break out your lederhosen for Austin’s annual Oktoberfest. Enjoy fresh meats and sausages, a bowling alley, and German bier tastings. Purchase your ticket ahead of time and arrive early. Dog lovers should check out Dogtoberfest below, since no pets are allowed at this event.
Dogtoberfest - Saturday, October 17, The Domain
Sign-in for the DogtoberTROT starts at 8:00 AM, with other events such as a costume contest, wiener dog races, and raffles going on throughout the day.
Camp Halloweekend - Friday, October 31 - Sunday, November 1, Lake Travis
Visit this summer camp for grownups and watch classic camp and Halloween favorites, see live music, and enjoy all the classic camp trappings. Tickets are going fast!
